Packing Pointers
Ten Packing Pointers
- Lists are essential – it’s easy to forget exactly what’s where when your items have been in storage for a few months. Make a list for each item/box, and keep a duplicate.
- Pack similar items together – such as accounting records in one box, inventory in another. Label each box as you complete and seal it.
- Remember you may still need to lift and carry the boxes, so consider splitting heavier items, such as books, between several smaller boxes rather than cramming them all into one big one.
- Protect fragile items, such as glass, mirrors and ornaments, with bubble wrap or tissue. Make sure the boxes are marked ‘Fragile’ – use specially marked tape if available.
- Make sure items are dry before putting into storage – a mildewed tent is an unpleasant surprise and basically unusable. Not a great start to summer.
- Drain oil and fuel from engines and machinery to minimise leaks or spills. This will also eliminate a potential fire hazard. Also, make sure you leave doors open on ovens, refrigerators and freezers, and dishwashers – and yes, drain and clean these items, too.
- Use the empty space in suitcases to store items – or pack different sized suitcases inside each other.
- Clean cushions, sofas, bedding and mattresses before storage, and protect with appropriate covers.
- Think about how often you’ll need to access your items (especially if you’re a trader, and stocking inventory). Place the least used items behind the ones you’ll need more frequently.
- Create a strong, steady base for your items by using the heaviest boxes at the bottom. Don’t be tempted to create a big, unsteady pile – if one box buckles, the whole lot will come down. Or use shelves.
